Jim was born on Long Island, New York in 1964. While in high school, he was offered a job as an inking assistant through long time friend and comic strip creator of Crock, Bill Rechin. After two years of patiently waiting, Jim finally made good on the offer and moved to Virginia just outside of Washington D.C. to assist comic book and strip artist, Mike Roy with Buck Rogers in the 25 Century. While working with Mike, Jim was amazed to find out that another of Mike's assistants at one time was the famous Jack Davis!

Having gotten bit by the bug of being able to earn money drawing pictures, Jim moved back to New York and became an inker for Marvel in 1983 jumping around on various Spiderman titles, then eventually started penciling as a fill in artist on titles such as Amazing Spiderman, X-Men Annual #13 (where he co-designed and drew Jubilee in her first story), Transformers and Wolverine. All the while also starting his relationship with D.C. Comics as a penciler on such titles as Legion '90, Adventures of Superman, Batman, Detective, and co-owner and artist for Scarlett. In addition to his comic book work, Jim was a Walt Disney World artist working for the Disney Design Group.

Along the way, Jim was pleased to become close friends and acquaintances of some of his comic book artist heroes, such as Don Heck, whom he was closest to until Don's passing in 1995, Sal Buscema, John Buscema, John Romita Sr., Joe Orlando, Mike Esposito, Ross Andru,
and Joe Giella.

Jim currently is co-owner and penciler of Crossing Midnight for Vertigo.

Leaving New York 12 years ago, Jim now resides in Florida where he doesn't bask in the beautiful sunshine because his sport of choice is drawing board surfing.
